Salary: £35,000 to £40,000 a year

About the Role

We are a dynamic group of companies specializing in legal and consultancy services. Our operations span multiple entities, each delivering specialized services to a diverse clientele. We seek an organized and detail-oriented Bookkeeper-Accountant to manage our internal accounting processes across the group of companies. This role is essential for maintaining financial accuracy, ensuring compliance, and providing valuable insights to support strategic decision-making. The postholder will report to the Managing Director/CEO

Main Duties

General Accounting and Bookkeeping:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounting records for all entities within the group.
  • Record day-to-day financial transactions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit card accounts, and other balance sheet accounts on weekly basis.
  • Ensure all intercompany transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled.
  • Handle the preparation and processing of client billing and vendor payments.

Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement) for each entity.
  • Assist in preparing consolidated financial reports for the entire group.
  • Analyze variances in financial results and provide explanations for any discrepancies.
  • Assist with the preparation of budgets and forecasts, monitoring actual performance against budgeted figures.

Compliance and Taxation:

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable tax regulations, including VAT, sales tax, and corporate tax filings.
  • Liaise with external auditors and tax advisors for annual audits and tax return preparation.
  • Ensure timely submission of government remittances and tax reports.
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions, ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulations.

Cash Flow Management:

  • Monitor cash flow for each entity and the group, ensuring sufficient liquidity is available for operational needs.
  • Assist in managing the banking relationships and oversee any loan agreements or financial arrangements.
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and recommend actions to improve cash flow where necessary.

Internal Controls and Process Improvements:

  • Implement and monitor internal control procedures to safeguard the company’s assets.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency in financial operations.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate accounting policies and procedures, providing training to staff as needed.

Payroll and Human Resources Support:

  • Process payroll for employees across the group, ensuring accuracy in salary disbursement, deductions, and remittances.
  • Maintain employee records, including tax forms and benefits.
  • Assist with any ad hoc HR-related accounting or reporting requirements.

Other Duties:

  • Assist the Managing Director / CEO with special projects, financial analysis, and ad hoc reporting as required.
  • Support operational teams with financial insights and advice for business decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant accounting and bookkeeping experience, preferably within professional services (legal or consultancy industries).
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, or similar), Microsoft Excel, and other MS Office applications.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP or IFRS), tax regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Attention to Detail: High degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to financial details.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze financial issues and provide solutions or recommendations.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong time management skills and ability to manage multiple tasks across several entities.
