About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work on Ward 1 at the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven. Ward 1 is a surgical elective ward providing care for Orthopaedic, Gynaecology, Breast Care and General surgical patients. We also accept surgical and gynaecological emergency admissions from A&E, WOPD and SDEC. We provide post-operative rehabilitation for Orthopaedic Trauma and general Surgical patients from CIC. Medical outliers within the ward are well supported by experienced ACP’ and in-house Medical Consultant.

The successful candidates will work in support of the registered nursing team in providing the fundamentals of care for our patients. You will be expected to undertake the Care Certificate to enhance your knowledge and the care that you provide.
The role requires staff to work days, nights and weekends.
Main Duties
Clinical
- Will carry out delegated, repetitive, routine and familiar tasks.
- Will in time develop an awareness of normal parameters concerning patient / client wellbeing and report that which is out with normal parameters to the registered professionalÂ
- Will carry out routine elements of assessment to enhance the patient / client journey, following an initial assessment by a registered practitioner.
- Meet basic care needs of patients, washing dressing, assistance with feeding etcÂ
- Plans own work day to day work tasks or activities to meet the individuals health and wellbeing needs
Administration
- Greet and receive patients, carers and other visitors to the ward / department in a courteous and helpful manner, whilst being mindful that there may be barriers to understanding.
- Provide and receive routine messages accurately and in ways that are understood by the recipient, referring issues to the appropriate person where necessary. This could be face to face, written, or verbal.
Additional duties
- Notify appropriate person regarding events or observations or equipment faults.Â
- May be first point of contact for a complaint, or incident therefore must ensure an appropriate response and that it is reported in a timely manner to Nurse in Charge
- Promote Health and Safety maintaining best practice in Health Safety and Security
- Contribute to the improvement of service by reflecting on own practice and that of others.
Qualifications
- National Care Certificate or commitment to complete as part of induction process.
Desirable
- NVQ 2 in care (willingness to complete within one year of start date) or equivalent experience
