Douglas Macmillan Hospice is seeking a compassionate Health Care Support Worker to join its dedicated team in Stoke-on-Trent. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about delivering high-quality care in a hospice setting, with flexible options for full-time (37.5 hours) or part-time schedules.

As a Health Care Support Worker, you will provide essential support to patients, helping them maintain comfort, dignity, and wellbeing. The role involves assisting with personal care, supporting daily routines, and contributing to a safe and compassionate environment for patients and their families. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to effectively communicate with patients, colleagues, and healthcare professionals, while the ability to work both independently and collaboratively ensures high-quality care delivery.

Applicants should have experience in a healthcare or caring role, alongside good numeracy and literacy skills (GCSEs or equivalent, or willingness to work towards). Flexibility to work a variety of day and night shifts is required to meet the needs of the hospice.

We’re looking for dedicated Health Care Support Workers to join our Adult Inpatient Services team at Dougie Mac.

Our 28-bed specialist unit supports adults with life-limiting conditions, offering both palliative and end-of-life care. You’ll be part of a 24/7 multidisciplinary team, ensuring patients receive outstanding holistic care in a calm, supportive environment.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide high-quality personal and physical care to patients
  • Support individuals and their families with dignity and compassion
  • Observe and report any changes in patient condition
  • Assist in the last days of life care and bereavement support
  • Follow individual care plans and maintain accurate documentation
  • Uphold hospice values, infection control and confidentiality standards
  • Engage in training and continuous development opportunities

Essential:

  • Experience in a caring or healthcare role
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Team player who can also work independently

Desirable:

  • NVQ/QCF Level 2 in Health & Social Care
  • Experience in palliative care or hospice settings
  • Confidence working with patients and families in a clinical environment
