Position: Healthcare Assistant

Salary: £28,622 to £30,225 a year inclusive of Outer HCAS per annum

About the Role

Join the dedicated team at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust as a Healthcare Assistant, where you will play a vital role in supporting patient care under the supervision of registered nurses. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the provision of care to patients, supporting and being supervised by a registered nurse.
  • Assist patients with all activities of daily living.
  • Assists qualified staff by undertaking personal care duties for patients.
  • Reports patient’s condition to qualified staff.
  • Full range of manual and clerical duties.
  • Will be required to maintain the orderliness and hygiene and safety of the ward/departmental environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic, patient-focused and conscientious HCA to join Duke of Gloucester Ward.

We are looking for a HCA who has excellent care values, deliver high quality patient centred care and provides gold standard documentation.

Previous orthopaedic experience would be advantageous. The candidate will be fully supported.

As an individual you must be flexible, have excellent communication skills and capable of working well with members of the team and wider MDT.

The successful candidate must be motivated to develop to their full potential.

Main Duties

  • Check and prepare patients for treatment by qualified staff
  • Perform simple non-aseptic dressings
  • Collect specimens
  • Supervise, where appropriate, less experienced health care assistants
  • Perform intermittent catheterisation, record and report outcome to a trained nurse
  • Perform and record vital observations and report findings to a trained nurse
  • Perform bowel management for patients; record and report outcomes to a trained nurse
  • Perform tracheal suction for patients who require domiciliary ventilation under supervision of trained nurses.
  • Apply brace and splints as necessary
  • Perform hoisting and transferring safely of a patient from: bed chair commode. 

Qualifications

Essential

  • Good general education
  • After 1 year: Be working to NVQ level 2

Desirable

  • GCSE in maths and English NVQ level II in care or equivalent

Experience (Essential)

  • Previous experience in a health care setting.
  • Housekeeping experience
  • After 1 year: Taking of general patient observations Manual handling of patients using lifting aids

Desirable

  • Health care experience in a acute hospital environment
  • Taking of general patient observations
  • Manual handling of patients using lifting aids
  • After 1 year: Hospital Computer systems

Skills (Essential)

  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively – to understand and be understood
  • Basic numeracy Basic literacy
  • Good basic hygiene skills – food handling, hand washing

  • Able to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as on own initiative

  • Able to work with minimal supervision
  • After 1 year: Able to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy, ever changing environment

  • After 1 year: Computer experience
