About the Role

Bart’s Health Children’s Hospital at The Royal London is looking to recruit an experienced Healthcare Assistant (HCA) Band 2 at 0.84 WTE who will work on 7D Paediatric Assessment and Short Stay Unit in the Children’s Division.

The post holder will ideally have experience of working with children and young people within a care environment and is expected to work with and support the Children’s Division as a whole. The HCA is expected to undertake assigned tasks involving direct care to meet the needs of patients under supervision of a Senior HCA and Registered Nurse.

All the wards and departments within Children’s Division are versatile and dynamic, committed to high quality holistic care with an emphasis on working in partnership with the children and young people and their families. The post holder will have excellent communication skills, be adaptable and keen to learn and develop new skills and knowledge through the availability of a variety of training opportunities. This may include assisting qualified nursing staff in the planning and prioritising of nursing care, but also the contribution to maintaining a safe and secure ward environment.

Barts Health has a diverse, busy, and demanding children’s service requiring staff to be flexible in their working. The post holder will be required to work within a challenging clinical environment and may undertake shift work which may include nights and weekends.

Main Duties

  • Monitor and record patients’ vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and report any abnormal results to registered nursing staff.
  • Measure and record patients’ height and weight. 
  • Undertake clinical tasks relevant to the specific clinical area following competency sign off. For example: ECG, urinalysis, MRSA screening, recording of allergies, and other clinical tasks where training or competency sign off has been deemed appropriate for HCA and have been ratified through the nursing division.
  • To provide 1:1 care when indicated for Children and Young people with Mental Health Needs.
  • With specific training and competency assessment, be safe in looking after a child with a tracheostomy, completing safety checks, maintaining a patent airway, suctioning tracheostomy, changing tapes with parents or other competent staff member, perform emergency tracheostomy tube change if required. 
  • With specific training and competency to run blood samples through the blood gas analyser and PCT machines.
  • To assist the nursing staff in the admission of patients to the ward where applicable and demonstrate an understanding of discharge planning.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of infection control issues by attending mandatory training; understand policy and procedure, accept responsibility for own infection control practice and be willing to challenge others practice.
  • Understand the dietary needs of patients, undertake STAMP nutritional assessment, monitoring and recording of fluid and nutrition intake, and utilize nutrition charts and working alongside the ward host/hostess and housekeeper to meet patient needs.

Qualifications

  • Maths and English GCSE’s or equivalent
  • Care Certificate Holder
  • Previous experience of working with children and young people in the acute hospital setting
