Turning Tides, West Sussex’s leading homelessness charity, is seeking a committed Housing Support Officer to join the team in East Grinstead. About Turning Tides

Turning Tides is the largest provider of services for single homeless people in West Sussex, supporting individuals across Adur and Worthing, Littlehampton, Horsham District and Mid Sussex. Founded in 1991 by a group of Christians in Worthing, Turning Tides now accommodates over 200 people each year in more than 20 properties throughout the county.

Turning Tides delivers effective, sustainable services designed to create real pathways out of homelessness. Every service is shaped by the understanding that each person’s situation is unique, and the organisation works alongside clients to build on their strengths and lived experiences.

With the support of over 5,000 supporters, 300 volunteers and 140 dedicated staff, Turning Tides offers a warm, safe space and practical help at every stage of someone’s journey — from outreach on the streets and drop-in hubs, to residential projects, specialist mental health and addiction support, and move-on housing towards independent living.

Working in close partnership with communities and local organisations, Turning Tides believes that together, homelessness in West Sussex can be ended for good.

Position: Housing Support Officer

Salary: £28,137 per annum

About the Role:

This service is a medium to low support project where residents are provided support and intervention to improve tenancy sustainment skills. Through a trauma informed and strength-based approach you will move residents toward permanent accommodation ensuring any ‘wrap around’ support necessary has been put in place. This may include working with mental health, substance misuse, debt service to name a few.

You will work with residents on a 1:1 basis and facilitate group work. You will be supporting residents with benefits awards and other mental health or physical support needs with partner agencies and GPs. Working with them to gain and sustain a tenancy within their locality.

Additionally, you will support the Move on Housing Manager with the housing management aspects of the project including health and safety requirements of the building, collection of income through housing benefit and the project service charge. As part of this role, you will cover other areas such as cover for staff leave and sickness across the Move on Housing District, attending meetings with internal and external partners. Some flexibility to work outside of standard office hours may be required on occasion. Working across Move on Housing North projects is essential.

This role could suit an applicant with transferrable skills, not necessarily from within the homelessness sector.
