Position: Maternity Support Worker

Salary: £24,071 to £25,674 per annum; Part Time: £14,442 – £15,404 per annum

About the Role

Fantastic opportunity to become a Maternity Support Worker(MSW) within Boston Community Midwifery Team. This role is part time 22.5 hours per week.

The maternity support worker (MSW) will support a registered midwife or medical practitioner in the delivery of care to women using the maternity services. The MSW will be able to carry out a defined range of duties involving direct care in support of the midwife. The MSW under guidance will help and support the Public Health agenda by giving smoking, dietary and breastfeeding advice.

The ideal candidate should be motivated and committed to join a supportive, forward thinking team. Ideally they should already be working as a Band 2 Health Care Support Worker or something similar, with experience within the Maternity, Neonate or Paediatric services. Training and assessment will be provided to enable the candidate to provide the clinical duties as outlined in the job description. They will be supported during an induction period .

Please note you will be asked to provide your qualification certificate for NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent). You will also be required to have a full driving licence and use of own car.

Role includes weekend working, usually one weekend per month.

Main Duties

General Duties

  • The re-stocking and re-ordering of supplies and equipment
  • Identifying and reporting faulty equipment
  • Cleaning equipment and preparing it for tests/investigations and procedures
  • Cleaning and making beds
  • Sterilising feeding equipment

General Clinical Duties

  • Assisting midwifery staff in giving a holistic approach to individualistic care to women in pregnancy and postnatally
  • Maintain complete, accurate and legible documentation. Provide verbal and written reports on the condition of the mother and baby to the appropriate midwife
  • Independently monitor maternal vital signs and complete documentation accurately
  • Be able to recognise deviations from the normal when monitoring maternal vital signs and inform the midwife

Antenatal Duties

  • Organise, prepare and set up a booking clinic
  • Support the midwife in antenatal clinics
  • Assist with ultrasound and transvaginal scans
  • Health promotion including smoking cessation, diet, breastfeeding and parenting skills
  • Undertake GTT for women within the clinic environment.

Qualifications

Essential

  • To undertake specific training for MSW when appointed
  • Flexible/adaptable approach to working patterns
  • Ability to communicate with members of the public and health care providers
  • Ability to work effectively under direct and Ability to work effectively under direct and indirect supervision, as part of a multi-disciplinary
  • Presents self as courteous, respectful and helpful

Desirable

  • Assessor for Care Package for new HCSW

Qualifications (Essential)

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social care (or equivalent qualification)
  • GCSE Grade C or above in English and Maths(or equivalent qualification)

Desirable

  • Completion of the Care Certificate Working towards a relevant qualification ie on the apprenticeship programme

Previous Experience (Essential)

  • Experience of working in a health care environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable

  • Experience of practice as a HCSW
  • Experience of working in an antenatal setting
  • Experience of working with mothers and babies in the postnatal period
  • Experience supporting mothers with breastfeeding
  • Experience of parenting skills

Skills (Essential)

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic IT skills
  • Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision, as part of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to use own initiative to plan and prioritise own and delegated work tasks and activities
  • Good, clear telephone manner and customer care skills.
  • Knowledge of the importance of health and safety issues.
  • Awareness and Knowledge of the dignity in care agenda.
  • Ability to evidence/demonstrate key values and behaviours in line with the Trust framework

Desirable

  • Competence in extended clinical skills
  • Evidence of recent study
  • Safeguarding training and involvement with planning care
