About St Joseph’s

St Joseph’s School, now an independent charity with its own Trustee Board, has a long history of care and education. Founded in 1916 by the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, St Joseph’s moved to its current home in Cranleigh in 1950. Although the Order no longer runs the school, its spirit of compassion, justice, and faith lives on in St Joseph’s commitment to nurturing and empowering every student.

Originally a boys’ school, St Joseph’s welcomed girls from 1984 and opened its Extended and Further Education courses the same year. The school site, once part of the historic Wyphurst Estate, retains much of its character, including the Chadwyck-Healey family motto CredeMihi – ‘Believe in Me’ – which still inspires the school community today.

Today, St Joseph’s continues to provide specialist education and care, including three residential houses, and remains dedicated to shaping a supportive and inclusive environment for children and young people with special educational needs.
