About the Role
Band 3 Health Care Assistant, Theatres. Up to 112.5 hours per week available, Full time and part time
Health Care Assistant, Theatres, West Cumberland Hospital (variable working pattern including weekends).
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Health Care Assistant to join our clinical team within our operating theatre complex at the West Cumberland Hospital.
We currently have 8 theatres, covering a variety of specialties: Trauma & Orthopaedics, Vascular, Colorectal, Upper GI, Urology, ENT, Gynaecology, Breast and Obstetrics.
Main Duties
- To support the registered practitioners in the holistic care of patients having surgery under general, regional and spinal anaesthesia.
- To contribute to the perioperative team as a circulating member of the scrub team to ensure safety of the patient during their operative period, by participating in the provision of sterile equipment, swab, needle and instruments counts, and the five steps to safer surgery.
- Respond to the care needs of the patient with patience and empathy that promotes privacy and dignity.
- Communicate with a wide range of patients (adults and children) undergoing general, local and spinal anaesthesia and provide explanation of ongoing care and support as neededÂ
- Manages barriers to communication with patients within the perioperative setting using good interpersonal skills
- Assist in appropriate perioperative care of the patient.
- Maintain accurate records of patient care given, completing the patient care plan, operation register, specimen book, stent regsiter and computerised theatre system, ensuring accurate data input.
- Complete the relevant sections of documentation accurately, including forms for histology, microbiology, breast screening, specimen registers, NJR forms and the tracking of prostheses.
- Undertake departmental reception duties – liaising with the bed manager, Operational service managers, consultant surgeon, consultant anaesthetists and theatre team leads
Qualifications
Qualifications (Essential)
- National Care Certificate or commitment to complete as part of induction process
Desirable
- NVQ3 in theatre care or equivalent.
- NVQ 2 in care or equivalent
Experience (Essential)
- Work in a caring environment.
Desirable
- Recent work in a theatre environment.
Knowledge (Essential)
- Awareness of the requirements of the post.
- Demonstration of continued learning
Desirable
- Nursing and midwifery policies and procedures.
Skills and Aptitudes (Essential)
- Ability to work as a team member, without close supervision
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
